Additional personnel: Dewey Redman (tenor saxophone); Bryce Peltier (trombone); Johnny Goetchius (keyboards, background vocals); Carol Steel (percussion); Ada Dyer, Paulette McWilliams, Mark "Flo" Volman (background vocals). Take eight musicians whose footing is equally planted in rock and jazz, and factor in that three of them comprise a razor sharp horn section. No, it's not 1970s era Chicago, it's the Cherry Poppin' Daddies. On their latest release, SOUL CADDY, golf is a recurring theme and vocalist Steve Perry (not to be confused with the AOR legend and former Journey vocalist) "swings" a mighty drive. Wasting no time, the band pay tribute to pop culture darling Tiger Woods in "Swingin' With Tiger Woods." Unlike many other neo-swing bands, Cherry Poppin' Daddies aren't afraid to tackle straight-ahead pop and hard rock in one moment and do justice to Zoot suits and chain wallets in the next. Bordering on pop-punk, "Irish Whiskey" takes a detour into a sand trap while the finger snappin' "So Long Toots" lands squarely on the green. While these daddy-o's aren't quite in shape for any Nike tours, this new collection of fun, genre-hopping music is primed for the concert stage.
