Equally talented as a singer, songwriter, keyboardist and guitarist, Babyface has done more than anyone to shape the face of modern R&B, writing and producing for a variety of artists and inspiring a league of imitators who pale in comparison to the original. On THE DAY, his first solo album since 1993's FOR THE COOL IN YOU, he makes it plain that there ain't nothing like the real thing. Babyface is capable of conjuring many moods, but his forte is the slow, sensual ballad. On the opening "Everytime I Close My Eyes," he envelops the listener in a slinky, simmering world where an undertow of subtle drum loops and mellow synthesizer washes pulls you down into the heart of the song. ("Everytime" features pop-jazz saxophonist Kenny G, who released the song simultaneously on his album THE MOMENT). While much of THE DAY is preoccupied with the eternal pop topic of romance, Babyface shifts gears on "Simple Days," a reflective tune that finds him recalling his poor-but-happy childhood with a wistful longing. LL Cool J and Jody Watley guest on the closing tour de force, "This Is For The Lover In You."
Spin (12/96, p.147) - "...relies on cameos from Eric Clapton, Stevie Wonder and a reunited Shalamar. Plus Kenny G, which works in this upside-down, fascinating pop sphere..."
Entertainment Weekly (11/1/96, p.68) - "...All the Babyface trademarks--the crisp, unobtrusive percussion, the silky guitars, the harmonies that blanket the melodies like a quilt--are laid out like a three-piece suit. But more so than any previous album he's made, THE DAY is chockful of luscious, gently persuasive songs..." - Rating: A-
Vibe (3/01, p.192) - 3.5 discs out of 5 - "...Inthe hurly-burly of today's music scene, it's getting a lot easier to appreciate the charms of this quiet man..."
Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds is one of the few achievers of a true pop-music trifecta: writer, producer, and recording artist. While penning songs for some of the biggest pop stars of the 1990s--Boyz II Men, Toni Braxton, and Whitney Houston, among others--Babyface also perfected a mature, urban pop sound that marked him as one of the finest and most successful producers of the decade. A popular singer in his own right, Babyface won a best R&B vocal Grammy in 1995, and released the star-studded FACE 2 FACE in 2000.
