Performer: Frank Sinatra
Distributor: Sony Music Distribution (

Notes: Compilation producers: Didier C. Deutch, Charles L. Granata, Darcy M. Proper. Recorded between 1943 & 1952. Includes liner notes by James Gavin. Digitally remastered by Darcy M. Proper (April 2000, Sony Music Studios). Liner Note Author: James Gavin. Recording information: 12/01/1944-02/06/1952. Arranger: Axel Stordahl. This selection of classic Frank Sinatra ballads from the singer's heyday in the 1940s and '50s, when he was the darling of teenage bobbysoxers countrywide, features the singer at perhaps his purest, with his voice still achingly vulnerable on tracks like "I Fall in Love Too Easily" and "Embraceable You" (two of five previously unreleased alternate takes featured in this collection). Sinatra conjures both love's joy and heartbreak, and his delivery is perfectly complemented by Axel Stordahl's masterfully romantic string arrangements.
An icon of American music, Frank Sinatra defined sophisticated pop singing of the post-war era and spent more than 50 years in the limelight. After formative stints with Harry James, Tommy Dorsey, and others, Sinatra shot to worldwide fame through hit records and Hollywood movies. His hip, laid-back delivery defined cool, yet he also had a down-to-earth manner that connected easily with audiences. Ups and downs would follow him throughout his career--the details of his private life were not always fit for public consumption--but right up till the end, every comeback strengthened the intense loyalty of his fans.
