Performer: Pickin' On/Various Artists
Artist: Sheryl Crow Engineer: Brent Truitt; Tim Roberts Producer: Brent Truitt Distributor: E1 Distribution (USA) Notes: Personnel: Brent Truitt (acoustic & gut string guitars, dobro, mandolin, octave mandolin, percussion); Earl Palmer (acoustic guitar, dobro); Richard Bailey (5-string banjo); Lee Hanover (dobro); Tim Crouch (fiddle); Dennis Crouch (bass); Rock Savage (percussion). The Pickin' On series has always been rather hit and miss, so it is no surprise that on their tribute to Sheryl Crow they have a very hard time pulling off bluegrass renditions of her music. For one thing, her music does not really translate well to the genre despite her country leanings. Just hearing the dull versions of "Everyday Is a Winding Road" and "Sweet Rosalyn" brings to mind elevator music, not the fiery singer/songwriter. There is simply not enough going on in the original versions of these songs to warrant complicated bluegrass versions. What could have been quite original just does not float, despite the obvious effort put into it. There are a few exceptions; "Strong Enough" and "Riverwide" both succeed because the minimal arrangements sound so much like the originals, and "If It Makes You Happy" gets by on the strong original melody. But overall this is a fairly disappointing effort that does neither party justice. Fans of the series should know that this is a very weak entry, and fans of Crow should know that these renditions are quite bland. ~ Bradley Torreano
