Performer: Various Artists
Producer: Jeff Moskow (Compilation) Distributor: Universal Distribution Notes: Digitally remastered by Doug Schwartz (Audio Mechanics). The third '80s compilation in Universal's as-seen-on-TV series (following Pure '80s and More Pure '80s), Pure '80s Hits collects 19 more of the decade's new wave, AOR, and mainstream pop/rock hits. Unfortunately, there are a few more clunkers and mediocrities on this volume than its predecessors, but there are enough big hits to make it a decent compilation overall, including John Waite's "Missing You," Night Ranger's "Sister Christian," Asia's "Heat of the Moment," INXS' "Need You Tonight," and Tears for Fears' "Head Over Heels," plus the lower-charting classics like "Kids in America" by Kim Wilde and "A Million Miles Away" by the Plimsouls. If the majority of these songs aren't in your collection, this may be a good way to add them, but there are also more consistent '80s hits compilations available. ~ Steve Huey "Oh, no!" you might cry. "Not another '80s new wave compilation." Well, set your fears aside. While PURE '80s HITS does include some of the skinny-tie classics included on other collections of '80s hits by the likes of Duran Duran, Simple Minds, and Kim Wilde, the disc takes a broader view of the decade fashion forgot. This feat is accomplished by expanding beyond new wave into the pure pop of Rick Springfield's "Human Touch," post-prog rock in Asia's "Heat of the Moment," blue-eyed soul on Hall & Oates' "You Make My Dreams Come True," and AOR power ballads such as Night Ranger's "Sister Christian." Of course, there are a couple of pop hits here that transcend genre, such as John Waite's "Missing You" and the Plimsouls' Byrds-like "A Million Miles Away," just to give this collection that much more of an edge over the considerable competition.
