Performer: Bobby Womack
Distributor: E1 Distribution (USA) Notes: Liner Note Author: Graham Betts. Bobby Womack bills himself as The Last Soul Man, a title he has earned every right to wear. A fine songwriter and tasteful guitarist who possesses a strong, gritty voice, he has been turning out his brand of urban gospel-soul for more than 40 years, beginning with the single "Lookin' for a Love" in 1962. This two-disc retrospective covers his career from "Lookin' for a Love" and its follow-up, "It's All Over Now" (later a hit for the Rolling Stones), through imaginative covers ("Fly Me to the Moon," "California Dreamin'"), his big early-'70s singles ("That's the Way I Feel About 'Cha," "Woman's Gotta Have It") and his blaxploitation hit, "Across 110th Street," the title song from the film. Imagine the powerful voice of a Wilson Pickett coupled with the subtle grace of a Marvin Gaye (or Sam Cooke, Womack's mentor) and add Curtis Mayfield on guitar, and you get the recipe for The Last Soul Man. That Womack is still relatively unknown to the general public is baffling, since his body of work stands up to any in the pop-soul arena. ~ Steve Leggett
One of the principal architects of 1960s R&B and soul, Bobby Womack combined songwriting genius--his material has been covered by countless artists in a myriad of genres--with a sinuous blues-derived guitar style that was equally influential. He played guitar on Sly Stone's THERE'S A RIOT GOIN' ON, sang with the Stones, toured with Sam Cooke, wrote for Wilson Pickett, and that's just the tip of the iceberg.
