Distributor: Allegro Corporation (Dist Notes: As for the "best of jazz saxophone classics," just throw that title away. This is a curious collection of material from the Warner and Atlantic vaults. With the exception of the Charlie Parker performance, all the others were done in stunning audio quality, and Bird's performance is typically wonderful as it comes from the Dial Records years to which Warner owns the masters. The music is very diverse, ranging from Coltrane to Eddie Harris to Yusef Lateef, whose "Russell and Elliot" comes from his magnificent but too little celebrated Yusef Lateef's Detroit album. Rahsaan Roland Kirk and Wayne Shorter, as well as Ornette Coleman, are all welcome additions here as well. ~ Thom Jurek
