Hip-O's Ultimate Collection: The Complete Hits will likely be too much music for most audiences, simply because most listeners don't remember much more than "Love Will Keep Us Together," "Muskrat Love," and "Do That to Me One More Time" from Captain & Tennille. They actually had many more hits than that -- 11 more, four of which hit the Top Ten, actually (for the record, they are "The Way I Want to Touch You," "Lonely Night (Angel Face)," "Shop Around," and "You Never Done It Like That"). All of them are here, along with several other singles and album tracks on this generous 22-track collection. To be frank, Captain & Tennille weren't quite varied or deep enough to make this collection not lose steam toward the middle, but the highlights -- the three Neil Sedaka-penned tunes ("Love Will Keep Us Together," "Lonely Night (Angel Face)," "You Never Done It Like That,") plus "Do That to Me One More Time" -- are all very good, standing proudly amongst soft rock hits of the time. Still, all of these can be better heard on a more concise collection, since a shorter running time makes Captain & Tennille sound like more consistent hitmakers. Although some listeners will prefer to have this more thorough overview, the number of tracks on Ultimate Collection reveals that the duo could only occasionally put it across the plate. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Perhaps no other song embodies the breezy, carefree sound of 1970s pop better than Captain & Tennille's smash hit "Love Will Keep Us Together." Both Daryl "Captain" Dragon and wife Toni Tennille were veterans of the music industry when they hooked-up in the early '70s. In 1975 the duo scored their first number one with the aforementioned confection (written by Brill Building vet and soft-rock kingpin Neil Sedaka), which also won a Grammy for Record of the Year. Captain & Tennille recorded several other hits during the decade, and in 1979 they reached the top of the charts again with "Do That To Me One More Time." Tennille embarked on a solo career in the '80s and into the '90s, but the duo reunited in 1995 for the album TWENTY YEARS OF ROMANCE.
