Carlos Nakai (vocals, flute, Native American flute, eagle bone whistle); David Darling (cello); Jeffrey Gordon, Michael Moses Tirsch (percussion). Audio Mixer: Peter Kater. Recording information: Source Music Studios, Ashburn, VA. Photographers: Annie Krause; John Running. Arranger: Peter Kater. Through Windows and Walls is the umpteenth collaboration between R. Carlos Nakai and Peter Kater. It is, as expected, a set of classy, sensitive, and sensible arrangements. Kater's powerful keyboards play with, to, and around Nakai's supersonic flutes and whistles. The compositions are serene and soulful. Kater and Nakai are in total synergy and harmony, and reach listeners on several levels. This is great acoustic ambience. It will appeal to fans of Dean Evenson, Robert Tree Cody, and Coyote Oldman. ~ Jim Brenholts Magic happens when pianist Peter Kater collaborates with Native American flautist and vocalist R. Carlos Nakai. Kater's sweeping keyboard parts provide majestic expanses for Nakai's flute and eagle-bone whistle trills, which soar like birds, wind, and spirits in flight. Occasional tribal percussion and David Darling's cello add deeper, earthier hues. From the rollicking "When Worlds Collide" to the contemplative "Remember When" to the mysterious "Child's Play," the compositions are easy and open, with an improvised feel that never sounds careless. While not traditional Native American music, these spirited songs convey all the enchantment of the Western plains.
NAPRA Review (11-12/01, p.74) - "...A richly profound elaboration of the soul-stirring sound they create together..."
