Performer: Liars
Engineer: Steve Revitte Producer: Liars; Steve Revitte Distributor: Caroline Distribution Notes: Liars: Angus (vocals); Aaron Hemphill (guitar); Pat Nature (bass); Ron Albertson (drums). Recorded in Brooklyn, New York. Audio Mixers: Liars; Steve Revitte. Audio Remasterer: Denis Blackham. Recording information: Brooklyn, NY (06/30/2001-07/01/2001). One of many post-punk-influenced bands to emerge from New York City at the beginning of the new millennium, Liars announced their arrival with 2001's THEY THREW US ALL IN A TRENCH & STUCK A MONUMENT ON TOP. Revealing a penchant for Gang of Four angularity (as well as bizarre phrases) on the searing opening track, "Grown Men Don't Fall in the River, Just Like That," and the slinky "Nothing Is Ever Lost or Can Be Lost My Science Friend," the Williamsburg, Brooklyn-based group also shattered any thoughts of accessibility with TRENCH's 30-minute closer, "This Dust Makes Mud," a noisy drone piece sure to shake all but the most adventurous listeners.

CMJ (8/16/02, p.6) - "...Breaking molds and transcending genres, this is Liars."
NME (Magazine) (8/17/02, p.33) - 8 out of 10 - "...A slippery punk-funk manifesto..."
Once the poster boys of the early-2000s dance punk movement, Liars reemerged as an uncompromising, visionary art/noise ensemble following a substantial line-up change and a move from Brooklyn to Berlin. Over the course of a mere three albums, Liars managed to amass a considerable underground following, alienate that following, and then convene an entirely new set of fans. Whichever side of the proverbial fence one chooses to sit on vis-a-vis the band's music, there's no denying Liars' volatile creativity.
