Shirley Caesar, the self-proclaimed First Lady of Gospel, is rightfully considered Mahalia Jackson's natural successor--she's blessed with a hugely powerful voice and a preaching style to go with it. The North Carolinan singer began performing with legendary gospel group the Caravans in the late 1950s, but she left in '66 for a solo career. Caesar would later win several gospel Grammys, including one for "Sailing on a Sea of Love," a duet with Al Green. For a while, she dabbled in a more R&B-oriented approach, but eventually returned to her usual, traditional church-based gospel style, as befitting a pastor of the Mt. Calvary Word Of Faith Holy Church.
