Digitally remastered by Lee Hershberg. Personnel includes: Frank Sinatra (vocals); Nelson Riddle (conductor, arranger). Includes liner notes by Lawrence D. Stewart. Recorded in 1963 between the ultra-swinging SINATRA-BASIE and SINATRA'S SINATRA, THE CONCERT SINATRA is a short, richly musical set of classic theatre songs, some of which ("Ol' Man River," the "Soliloquy" from CAROUSEL, "Bewitched" from PAL JOEY ) were milestones in Sinatra's earlier career. Here arranger Nelson Riddle is allowed to work with a large symphony orchestra and the results once more are a textbook example of fine orchestration. The formal settings do not prevent Riddle from handling this potentially "heavy" material with his characteristically deft touch. For instance, Sinatra/Riddle's sure reading of the epic "Ol' Man River" is far superior to the over-the-top Alex Stordahl-arranged '40s version. Sinatra is in fine voice throughout; no evidence here of the increasingly rough delivery which came to characterize his '60s output. The classiest of the Reprise albums.
An icon of American music, Frank Sinatra defined sophisticated pop singing of the post-war era and spent more than 50 years in the limelight. After formative stints with Harry James, Tommy Dorsey, and others, Sinatra shot to worldwide fame through hit records and Hollywood movies. His hip, laid-back delivery defined cool, yet he also had a down-to-earth manner that connected easily with audiences. Ups and downs would follow him throughout his career--the details of his private life were not always fit for public consumption--but right up till the end, every comeback strengthened the intense loyalty of his fans.
