For former Rolling Stone scribe turned director Cameron Crowe, music serves as the muse for his filmmaking. For his American remake of the Spanish thriller "Abre Los Ojos," Crowe and longtime collaborator Danny Bramson created an eclectic soundtrack that ties in perfectly with the movie's surrealistic shadings. The post-modern bag of tricks includes classic psychedelia by The Monkees ("Porpoise Song [Theme From 'Head']"), a gem by Iceland's Sigur Ros (the ambient "Svefn-G-Englar"), and contributions from the mighty Radiohead (a jittery "Everything In Its Right Place"), and lesser-known Looper (an infectiously funky "Mondo '77"). Elsewhere, the ex-critic feeds his classic rock cravings with Paul McCartney's brand new pining title track, a remixed version of Peter Gabriel's "Solsbury Hill," and a vintage live version of Bob Dylan's "Fourth Time Around." Along with great choices by The Chemical Brothers, Jeff Buckley, and Josh Rouse are a pair of songs by R.E.M., the previously released "Sweetness Follows" and newly recorded jangle, "All The Right Friends." The most pleasant surprise is the Mazzy Star-flavored dream-pop of "I Fall Apart" composed by Nancy Wilson and sung by Julianna Gianni(aka Cameron Diaz).
