Performer: Various Artists
Distributor: BMG (distributor) Notes: Compilation producers: Craig Balsam, Cliff Chenfeld. The second volume of the popular Southern rock collection features several more classics of the genre. Some of the more notable inclusions are Black Oak Arkansas' "Jim Dandy," Lynyrd Skynyrd's "What's Your Name," Foghat's "Slow Ride," and perhaps the king of all Southern rock, Skynyrd's "Free Bird." Fans of the genre (or even '70s rock in general) will probably find this a very enjoyable album. ~ Bradley Torreano As the previous volume of GOIN' SOUTH proved, and this successor continues to show, southern rock never dies. Sure, the style might have received a jumpstart via the antics of Kid Rock, but this compilation is completely devoid of any new-school rap-rock flavor; it's strictly '70s southern rock roots. Indeed, this is the stuff that guys like Kid Rock grew up on. From the road romance of the rambler narrative "Midnight Rider" (the Allman Brothers) to the lustiness of the Lynyrd Skynyrd blues-rocker "What's Your Name," these are the kind of songs during which rebel flags were made to be waved. While bone-crunching riff-rockers like Foghat's "Slow Ride" turn up here, the southern boy's sensitive side is represented as well, in the Marshall Tucker Band's poignant, flute-laced (!) ballad "Can't You See" and the infectious blues-pop of Elvin Bishop's "Fooled Around and Fell in Love."
