Notes: /Nelson De Lamotte. The guitar and saxophone duet album was popular in cool jazz circles in the '60s, but fell out of favor when the heavier sounds of fusion came into prominence. There's something intimate and appealing about the sound of a Brazilian-style guitarist and a cool saxophonist, though, as Danish jazzmen Lars Albertsen and Nelson de Lamotte well know. Their live duet album Bossa and You: Brazilian Summer Moods is a mellow delight. Albertsen isn't a flashy saxophonist, and his devotion to Stan Getz's lyrical style is obvious in every solo he plays. Similarly, de Lamotte is obviously enamored of the clipped, rhythmic guitar style and sensuous, murmured vocals of Joao Gilberto, to the point that the duo could go on the road with a Vegas-style revue called Bossa Nova Mania if they so desired. They actually don't do many of the bossa nova standards -- only fine but unexceptional versions of Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Desafinado" and "The Girl From Ipanema" skirt with clich -- and they do playfully twist the tradition by turning George Gershwin's "S'Wonderful" and the Danish folk song "Lugar Comum" into slinky bossas. There is very little that's new and different about Bossa and You: Brazilian Summer Moods, but it's a swell summertime listen. ~ Stewart Mason
