Performer: Various Artists

Like Down South, Rock This is part of Razor & Tie's line of classic rock compilations featuring a busty model on the front cover and a satisfying collection of classic rock favorites on the back cover. There is nothing here that isn't still played daily on AOR and classic rock stations -- well, REO Speedwagon's "Ridin' the Storm Out" and Boston's "Long Time" could be called ringers, since they're not played as much as "Keep On Lovin' You" or "More Than a Feeling," but they're not obscure -- but that doesn't matter because they're all good, they all work well together and it runs a generous 18 tracks. Sure, you might have all of these songs elsewhere in your collection, but if you don't and you'd like them on one disc, this can't be beat. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine If you grew up in the mid-to-late '70s, or just wish you did, ROCK THIS will deliver a generous dose of radio-friendly AOR from that era. The key to this kind of music is that it took the power of heavy guitar rock and yoked it to an accessible, hook-filled melodic sensibility. While Ted Nugent's primal "Cat Scratch Fever" represents the grittier end of the spectrum, Boston's "Long Time," Pat Benatar's "Heartbreaker," and Foreigner's "Feels Like the First Time" are the perfect union of crunching riffs, soaring vocals, and irresistible choruses. The more angular, synth-colored sound of the Cars' "Just What I Needed" and (whether you want to admit it or not) Loverboy's "Turn Me Loose" herald the arrival of New Wave and its eventual assimilation into the mainstream.
