Personnel: Sergio Mendes (vocals, piano); Joao Palma (vocals, drums); Jose Soares (vocals, percussion); Janis Hansen, Lani Hall, Bob Matthews (vocals); John Pisano (guitar). Recording information: 1967. Arranger: Sergio Mendes. EQUINOX (1967) was the second LP that Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 recorded for Herb Alpert's A&M label, immediately after HERB ALPERT PRESENTS SERGIO MENDES & BRASIL '66, which yielded the group's first smash hit, a brisk cover of Jorge Ben's driving "Mas Que Nada." True to form, the new LP opens with yet another Jorge Ben rhythm tune, "Chove Chuva (Constant Rain)," sung in English this time and given the gently percussive Brasil '66 treatment, highlighted by deft neo-psychedelic production touches like harpsichord and sitar. Indeed, this altogether successful followup boasts solid material throughout--Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Triste" and "Wave," Michel Legrand's "Watch What Happens," and a swinging '60s version of Cole Porter's "Night And Day," which translated perfectly into the bossa nova idiom. Featured vocalist Lani Hall excels on nearly every track, supported aptly by Mendes's own superior jazz-derived piano work. EQUINOX is an enduring classic of '60s adult pop.
Sergio Mendes is a Brazilian pianist/composer who created a highly accessible mix of Latin jazz, bossa nova, and AM-radio soft pop. This sound earned him and his group, Brasil '66 (originally Brasil '65 and later Brasil '77), a string of huge hit records in the '60s, and Mendes has remained an influential figure in world and lounge music circles.
