For their fourth album WELCOME TO MY PARTY, Rusted Root rejoined with producer Bill Botrell (who helmed their 1994 major label debut WHEN I WOKE) in addition to welcoming back former singing and songwriting member Jenn Wertzback into the fold. With the balance restored to the musical equivalent of a commune, Root managed to conjure up a rhythmically eclectic effort that does an excellent job showcasing this Pittsburgh outfit's even-handed fusion of heartfelt lyricism and extraordinary chemistry. Main Root vocalist Michael Glabicki leads the charge on a number of cuts including the heart-on-your sleeve balladry of the title track, quasi psychedelia of "Artificial Winter," and the syncopated fun of "Women Got My Money" with its tropical-flavored percussion by former Santana sideman Raul Rekow. Wertz also does a fine job reintroducing herself on the sassy funk of her self-penned "Weave" and "Blue Diamonds," a shimmering Wertz/Glabicki duet with Middle Eastern overtones. Other standout songs include the playful reggae of Liz Berlin's "Too Much," percolating opener "Union 7" (sure to make any jam band devotee salivate), and the anomalous, techno-like "People Of My Village" spearheaded by drummer Jim Donovan.
