Distributor: Universal Distribution Notes: DOGTOWN & Z-BOYS was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Compilation Album For A Motion Picture, Television, or Other Visual Media. DOGTOWN & Z-BOYS is the soundtrack to director Stacy Peralta's documentary film about the Zephyr team, a squad credited with transforming skateboarding from a mellow, sidewalk-based surfer pastime into a full-fledged "extreme" sport. The "Z-Boys," as members of the team were known, were a group of economically disadvantaged but highly confident and charismatic youths from the run-down Dogtown section of Venice, California. Throughout the late 1970s, they spent much of their free time attempting increasingly dangerous stunts, eventually inventing many of the tricks that formed the basis of the sport's standard repertoire. Fittingly, the music here consists of tough, hard-edged guitar rock from the Z-Boys' heyday. The disc includes a raging mix of familiar classic rock radio staples like the James Gang's "Funk #49" and ZZ Top's "La Grange," and forgotten stoner jams such as Thin Lizzy's "Bad Reputation" and Ted Nugent's "Motor City Madhouse." The pure power and single-mindedness perfectly reflect the skateboarders' pioneering attitude, and the collection provides an interesting historical/contextual glimpse of what qualified as skater music before the advent of punk rock.
