In fact, brothers Gene and Terrence Thornton (Malice and Pusha T, respectively) were born in that cradle of hip-hop the Bronx, but they spent their formative years on the streets of Virginia. LORD WILLIN' is the duo's second try at a debut album, as their previous effort for another label was indefinitely shelved. Turns out it was worth the wait. Produced by none other than the super-hot Neptunes, every track here pulsates with a crisp, funky energy that fully matches the sharply honed rhymes of the Thornton brothers, most spectacularly of all on the autobiographical "Young Boy," which is powered by one of the hardest-hitting grooves in recent memory. Born in the Bronx and raised in Virginia, the Thornton Brothers, Malice and Pusha-T (aka Gene and Terrence), pre-dated THE WIRE with their near-Shakespearean tales of hustling and drug-running. After nearly a decade of struggling and one seriously slept-on major label debut in the 1990's, Clipse scored in 2002 with the platinum album LORD WILLIN' and the Top 40 hits "Grindin'" and "When Was the Last Time." In the four-year wait between albums, the duo amassed a following that went beyond the bounds of hip-hop. HELL HATH NO FURY, with its gritty beats and club anthem "Wamp Wamp (What It Do)," fulfilled critics' and fans' already lofty expectations and established the Clipse as the bards of coke rap.
