Notes: The Geto Boys: Scarface, Willie D, Bushwick Bill. Audio Remasterer: Mike Dean . The 17 tracks on the Geto Boys' career-spanning collection compile their essential earlier singles like "Mind Playin' Tricks" and "Mind Of A Lunatic." But it also includes key tracks from their post-Scarface era, such as cult hit "Damn It Feels Good To Be A Gangsta," known primarily from the OFFICE SPACE soundtrack. The Boys' early years in particular are a template for the slowed-down Texas spin on West Coast gangsta tales that would inspire the chopped-and-screwed movement, all the while solidifying hardcore rap's role as relentless urban storytelling.
Houston, TX hip-hop trio the Geto Boys--featuring Bushwick Bill, Scarface, and Willie D.--exploded onto the rap world in the early 1990s with a style that gleefully exposed the dark underbelly of modern life. With tracks delving unflinchingly into the nastiest, most lurid corners of human behavior, the group virtually defined the hip-hop subgenre that would eventually come to be known as "horrorcore." Along the way they proved to be highly influential on the 21st-century sound of crunk, and on Southern rap in general. The band even scored the unlikeliest of top 40 hits in 1991 with the story-song "Mind Playing Tricks on Me."
