To listen to sound clips, you'll need the most current version of the
Performer: The Smashing Pumpkins
Distributor: EMI Music Distribution Notes: Smashing Pumpkins: Billy Corgan (vocals, guitar); James Iha (guitar); D'Arcy (bass); Jimmy Chamberlain (drums). Recording information: Atlanta, GA (1988-1994); Barcelona, Spain (1988-1994); Chicago, IL (1988-1994); London, England (1988-1994). First released in 1994 in VHS format as VIEUPHORIA, this collection of pre-MELLON COLLIE AND THE INFINITE SADNESS live tracks finds the groundbreaking Chicago quartet captured live during their marathon 1993-4 world tour in a variety of international settings, from London and Chicago to Spain and Japan. In addition to the original 10 live tracks featured on the video, including a half-time version of "Disarm" from British TV, and an unplugged "Cherub Rock" from a European MTV show, EARPHORIA features snippets of demos dotted throughout the proceedings, such as the opening "Sinfony" and the intriguing "Bugg Superstar," while the anthemic (and self-descriptive) closing instrumental jam "Why Am I So Tired" is something of a percussive tour-de-force for ace drummer Jimmy Chamberlin. Also available in DVD format, the set will be an education for those who wish to delve a little deeper into the Pumpkins' oeuvre, as well as an obvious must-have for Pumpkins completists.
Rolling Stone (12/12/02, p.100) - "...Documents the kind of dynamic back-and-forth that comes along in rock very, very rarely."
Uncut (1/03, p.119) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...The band's not quite tight, but that just makes Corgan's and co-guitarist James Iha's unpredictable detonations all the more powerful..."
CMJ (12/02/02, p.6) - "...EARPHORIA stands as an amazing display of a band that was just beginning to reach the pinnacle of both its commercial success and artistic output....This is a very welcome walk down memory lane..."
Before The Smashing Pumpkins, alternative rock had yet to touch upon the grandiose arena rock of the 1970s. Leader/singer/guitarist/songwriter Billy Corgan composed songs that were somehow part Boston, Cure, Queen, and Jane's Addiction. The Pumpkins were rewarded by becoming one of the biggest rock bands of the '90s. Corgan broke up the band at the beginning of the new century, yet after trying his hand as the leader of the band Zwan and as a solo artist, he reformed Smashing Pumpkins with a new line-up. The band has been touring and recording since 2005.
