Miles under the radar and outside the mainstream, Memphis rap collective Three 6 Mafia's prolific, harsh, uncompromising raps have built a tremendous following through tape swapping and other grass-roots methods. Not an unusual story in the Southern rap world, but Three 6 Mafia have managed platinum success creating an even rawer world than anything on No Limit, and through a thicker sheen of syrup than the Screwed-Up Click. The outfit's latest effort DA UNBREAKABLES reveals no dearth of material or focused anger in its 18 distinctive, hypnotically undeniable cuts. The most remarkable aspect of the album is its elaborate, dramatic production style, closest to what fellow Southerners the Geto Boys were doing a decade earlier. "They Bout To Find Yo Body" is a near perfect, unwavering blend of nu gangsta and old-school horror. "Money Didn't Change Me" hearkens back to the best of the horror rap genre, a cautionary tale delivered in the swaggering manner of Big Daddy Kane. DA UNBREAKABLES stands as both an unpredictable record and an original statement
With the possible exception of Eightball & MJG, no single act has done more to put Memphis hip-hop on the map than siz-erp sippin' gangstas Three 6 Mafia. The group's woozy proto-Dirty South style dates back to the early 1990s, and was brought to as large an audience as can be imagined, thanks to their 2006 Oscar-wining theme song for the acclaimed film HUSTLE & FLOW, "It's Hard Out Here For a Pimp."
