Performer: Various Artists
Producer: Craig DeGraff (Compilation); Dean Schachtel (Compilation) Distributor: WEA Strategic Marketing Notes: Audio Remasterer: Bob Fisher . There's nothing particularly extreme about X-Treme Rock other than the driving rhythms and blaring guitars -- it doesn't come with a street luge, or a two-liter bottle of Mountain Dew. But this budget release from Rhino Flashback does manage to gather a handful of '90s modern rockers without too much filler. Orgy's meaty power chord cover of New Order's "Blue Monday" will always be a guilty pleasure, Ministry's "Jesus Built My Hot Rod" is gleefully chaotic. Selections from Better Than Ezra ("Good"), Collective Soul ("Shine"), and Filter ("Hey Man Nice Shot") were spun to death, so they sound pretty stale here. But Nada Surf's "Popular" is probably good to have for your Weezer tribute mixtape, and the remix of Busta Rhymes' "Turn It Up" -- though out of place here -- is a terrific novelty with its Night Rider samples. ~ Johnny Loftus
