Performer: Various Artists
Distributor: Gotham Distributing Corp. Notes: This volume in the Collectables Top Hits series certainly lives up to its "Mega Hits" name. There are some huge and timeless hits here from a wide variety of styles that were popular in the 1970s. Listening to the disc is like listening to a radio station with an amazingly broad format, taking in album rock, new wave, soft rock, pop, disco, funk, and bubblegum among others. It is hard to pick out highlights on a disc this strong from top to bottom. It is much easier to pick out the songs that could have been replaced by something better. First on that list would have to be B.J. Thomas' tepid and limp version of the Beach Boys' classic "Don't Worry Baby." Second would be Donny & Marie Osmond's vapid "Morning Side of the Mountain." And that would be the list in its entirety. Every one of the remaining 18 songs is a killer reminder of why the 1970s rocked. From the hard rock of Free's "All Right Now" to the dreamy pop of Captain & Tennille's "Love Will Keep Us Together" to the throbbing disco of Donna Summer's "Hot Stuff," this collection is a fine way to remember the '70s. ~ Tim Sendra
