Performer: Various Artists
Distributor: Gotham Distributing Corp. Notes: Collectables' Top Hits of the Sixties: Chart Toppers does indeed provide original recordings of some of that decade's biggest hits, including Roy Orbison's "Oh Pretty Woman," the Byrds' "Mr. Tambourine Man," the Statler Brothers' "Flowers on the Wall," and Paul Revere & the Raiders' "Kicks." However, the collection's selections and track sequencing are somewhat random, bouncing from songs like the Isley Brothers' "It's Your Thing" to the Cyrkle's "Red Rubber Ball" with little rhyme or reason. Aside from featuring chart-topping hits, the album doesn't really offer a cohesive listening experience, although it comes close toward the end, where a string of folk and country singles -- including the Brothers Four's "Greenfields," Marty Robbins' "Don't Worry," and Johnny Horton's "Sink the Bismarck" -- work well together. While it's too scattered to work as a proper collection, Top Hits of the Sixties: Chart Toppers has enough classic singles to make it worthwhile if you've been looking for some of the songs it features. ~ Heather Phares
