Performer: Various Artists
Distributor: BMG (distributor) Notes: Consistently a player on the pop charts, Arista Records has always had its hand in shaping the musical tastes of the general public ever since legendary record exec Clive Davis (since departed for J Records) founded the label back in the '70s. To that end, ULTIMATE SMASH HITS does a fine job in showcasing the meat of the label's stable in 2002 and 2003. Divas like Toni Braxton ("Hit the Freeway"), Whitney Houston ("One of Those Days"), and Faith Evans ("I Love You," "Burnin' Up") lead the hit brigade along with male counterpart Usher ("U Don't Have to Call"). TLC ("Damaged") and Outkast with Killer Mike and Joi ("The Whole World") represent the hip-hop contingent, and the most welcome surprise is the Clipse, who wisely hooked up with old friends the Neptunes as producers on "Grindin'," and "When the Last Time." The only entrant from the rock field is Santana, whose 1999 comeback SUPERNATURAL was masterminded by Davis in the form of duets with contemporary pop stars. The game plan continued with 2002's SHAMAN, featuring the winsome hit "The Game of Love," with cutie-pie Michelle Branch. ULTIMATE SMASH HITS ends up being a stellar complement to the similar NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL MUSIC series.
