Performer: Love and Rockets
Distributor: Alternative Dis. Alliance Notes: Love And Rockets: Daniel Ash, David J, Kevin Haskins. Producers include: John A. Rivers, Love And Rocket, John Fryer, Doug DeAngelis, Sylvia Massey. Personnel: Daniel Ash (guitar); Kevin Haskins (drums). Photographers: Mitch Jenkins; Oscar Marzaroli; Fin Costello. Love and Rockets' first career-spanning compilation is a treat for listeners who understand that the trio was yet another alternative artist of the '80s (in similar company with the Smiths, the Cure, and Echo & the Bunnymen) capable of impressing with both their LP and 12" output. The trio's full-length classics, Express and Earth.Sun.Moon, were majestic, ethereal, and exquisitely paced, while their singles of the same period displayed a breathtaking range -- from dark rockers ("Kundalini Express," "Ball of Confusion [That's What the World Is Today]") to lighter material ("No New Tale to Tell," "Haunted When the Minutes Drag"). Much more than just a hits compilation, Sorted!: The Best of Love and Rockets also includes the best of the band's album tracks, such as "It Could Be Sunshine," the opener from 1986's Express, and "Sweet Love Hangover" from 1996's Sweet F.A.. ~ John Bush
Many a sad goth mourned the loss of Bauhaus in the early 1980s, but guitarist Daniel Ash and the Haskins brothers carried on without Peter Murphy, first in the short-lived Tones on Tail, and then, in 1985, with Love and Rockets. More pop-leaning than their earlier bands, they were still considered part of the burgeoning "alternative rock" movement that was gathering steam thanks to new mainstream outlets. A pair of charting hits in the U.S. and U.K. resulted in unprecedented fame for Ash and Co. After a five-year break, the band was dropped from their label, but returned in the mid '90s and released three more albums that featured a new electronic/dance bent. They quietly broke up in 1999.
