To listen to sound clips, you'll need the most current version of the
Performer: Selena
Artist: David Byrne Distributor: EMI Music Distribution Notes: This includes a bonus DVD disc. A gifted performer and a shining role model for the Latino community, Selena has been sorely missed since her tragic death in 1995. This essential collection features many of the finest moments in the all-too-short career of this Tejano superstar. Songs include "My Love," "I Could Fall in Love," the Diane Warren-penned "I'm Getting Used to You," "Dreaming of You," and a rousing live medley of disco classics "I Will Survive," "Funkytown," "Last Dance," "The Hustle," and "On the Radio." GREATEST HITS also boasts an upbeat cover of WEST SIDE STORY's "A Boy Like That," and "God's Child (Baila Conmigo)," written by and featuring David Byrne. Spanning Selena's recording history, these 16 tracks form an excellent single-disc overview and are a fitting tribute to her revered legacy.
The queen of Mexican pop music from the 1980s until her death in 1995, Selena Quintanilla had roots in the Tejano music of her native Mexico, but did more than anyone to introduce the Mexican pop scene into the worldwide mainstream with a sound equally influenced by dance music, R&B, and '80s pop/rock. Selena was recording her first English-language album and was on the verge of a huge international breakthrough when she was murdered at the age of 23 by the crazed president of her fan club. In a tragic irony, that album raced to Number One and Selena achieved posthumous iconic status. Two years later, the biopic SELENA was released, with Jennifer Lopez in the title role.
