Performer: Various Artists
Producer: Cliff Chenfeld; Craig Balsam Distributor: BMG (distributor) Notes: As bland as pop compilations can be, Pop Mix just might be blander. Released in August 2003, the set draws heavily from radio and video hits (and quite a few misses) of 1999 and 2000. As the comp is issued through Razor & Tie and something called MusicSpace.com, it can be assumed that the licensing for these tracks was recently discounted. Of the album's 18 cuts, only six were legitimate hits. Most of these have stood the test of three years' time (which is a million years in the pop scene). Backstreet Boys' "Larger Than Life" is still rousing; "All Star" from Smash Mouth is still fun; and Eiffel 65's guilty pleasure "Blue (Ba Da Bee)" is just as robotically catchy as it was for that brief sliver of time in November 1999. But if you didn't buy a hits compilation with these songs on it back then, you certainly don't need them now. And you definitely don't need anything from O-Town, Debelah Morgan, or the A-Teens. ~ Johnny Loftus
