IN 1982, Whodini--Jalil Hutchins (aka Jalil), John Fletcher (aka Ecstasy), and Drew Carter (DJ Grandmaster Dee)-- emerged out of Brooklyn, with management help from Russell Simmons and production assistance from Thomas Dolby, for their self-titled debut on Jive Records. Over the next four years, three albums, and smash party tracks such as "Magic's Wand," "Friends" (later sampled by Nas in "If I Ruled The World"), and "Freaks Come Out At Night," helped cement the group's place in the early history of hip-hop. Despite being signed by former dancer Jermaine Dupri for a comeback album in 1996, the group had trouble continuing their signature good-time sound, though Whodini were acknowledged in 2007 at VH1's Hip-Hip Honors.
