It's difficult to imagine a better musical backdrop to a romantic encounter than this collection of luxuriously seductive cuts from a singer fast rising to the top of the pile of R&B mack daddies. AND THEN follows in the footsteps of previous Joe concoctions in paying slavish attention to every facet of bedroom fantasy, from the title track's erotically breathy vocal hooks to the inventively sexy laundry list of possibilities on "Bedroom." Aided by sensual electric piano, persuasively plangent guitar, and achingly slow tempos, Joe has the insinuatingly pleading vocal chops to carry the album's suavely passionate conceits. The sophisticated production, courtesy of such talents as R. Kelly, himself a veteran of somewhat more controversial boudoir shenanigans, supplies the satin-smooth background.
Georgia native Joe has been crooning about his romantic escapades since 1993, mixing classic soul with hip-hop beats. His contribution to the soundtrack for BOOTY CALL ("Don't Wanna Be A Player") proved to be the singer's big commercial breakthrough, and he belongs on the frontline with such '90s R&B Casanovas as D'Angelo and Maxwell.
