Thanks to a career that's found Barbra Streisand straddling the mediums of film and song, it comes as no surprise that the concept of THE MOVIE ALBUM is a tribute to the two worlds that have given her so much success. Going as far back as the George Raft 1935 classic EVERY NIGHT AT EIGHT, right up on through the 1988 cult classic BAGDAD CAFE, Babs' overall resurrection of film material is fastidiously handled and, in many cases, given delightfully unexpected arrangements. "I'm in the Mood for Love" becomes a gentle bossa-nova number, and "Moon River" benefits from a reading marked by an understated acoustic guitar. One of the nicer touches in this package is the inclusion of song-by-song annotations for each track, written by Streisand herself. Here you find out that her late Bichon Frise Sammy gave her inspiration during the recording of Charlie Chaplin's "Smile," and "Wild Is the Wind" took her back to being a 15-year-old girl who loved Anna Magnani and had a crush on Tony Franciosa. THE MOVIE ALBUM is a lush keepsake sure to please pop-loving cinephiles and die-hard Babs fans alike.
When she emerged in a 1960s pop scene dominated by rock & roll, Barbra Streisand was a breath of fresh air to those nostalgic for the great Broadway-oriented pop vocalists of the past. Her stratospheric range and (initially) anachronistic taste in material made her the new Grande Dame of non-rock pop music. Along the way she experimented with the flavors of the day, from folk-rock to disco, but she always returned to the Great American Songbook for inspiration.
