To listen to sound clips, you'll need the most current version of the
Performer: Sam & Dave
Distributor: E1 Distribution (USA) Notes: Sam Moore and Dave Prater brought a fiery gospel fervor to their recordings for Stax Records in the mid- to late-'60s. Working with the crack production team of Isaac Hayes and Dave Porter, and backed by the greasy soul punch of Booker T. & the MG's, Sam & Dave had more energy per pound than anyone on the planet as the two attempted to out sing each other on classics like "Soul Man," "Hold on I'm Coming" and "You Got Me Humming." Unfortunately the versions on this compilation are not the original Stax recordings but pallid re-recordings done long after they left the label. That doesn't make these tracks awful, exactly, but anytime you take a band like the MG's out of the picture, well, the music is going to suffer. ~ Steve Leggett Sam Moore and Dave Prater brought a fiery gospel fervor to their recordings for Stax Records in the mid to late 1960s. The definitive '60s soul duo, Sam & Dave had both top-flight songs and one of the world's funkiest and most supple backing bands. The high-energy soulfulness of their performances has been copied by just about every bar band in the country, but never equaled. Their signature tunes "Hold On I'm Comin'," and "Soul Man" are part of R&B history.
