That's the immediate question that comes to mind upon first spinning Pickin' on the Beach Boys: A Bluegrass Tribute. Fans of the Beach Boys will certainly find no reward in listening to stripped-down and lifeless instrumental arrangements of "Good Vibrations" and "Help Me Rhonda," while any bluegrass devotee will surely find no excitement in a band of hired guns clearly focused on the sheet music with no opportunity to really dig into the tunes and interpret them. The band sounds bored, the EQ on each instrument sounds as if it were dialed in before any playing began, and overall, it sounds like a modern approach to elevator music -- not even pleasing as a novelty. ~ Gregory McIntosh
