Performer: Third Day
Artist: Paul Ebersold; Boyd Tinsley Engineer: Skidd Mills Producer: Paul Ebersold Distributor: BMG (distributor) Notes: Third Day: Mac Powell (vocals, acoustic guitar); Mark Lee, Brad Avery (guitar); Tai Anderson (bass instrument); David Carr (drums). Additional personnel: Paul Ebersold (acoustic guitar, piano, Hammond b-3 organ, Mellotron, programming); Boyd Tinsley (violin). Perusing the lyrics of WIRE, it's apparent that the mammoth success of Third Day's praise-themed albums, OFFERINGS I: A WORSHIP ALBUM and OFFERINGS II: ALL I HAVE TO GIVE, has given lead singer/main songwriter Mac Powell plenty of literary fodder. On several tracks, the vocalist pairs his band's trademark Lynyrd Skynyrd-via-Live grunge-boogie with words focusing on the difficulty of reconciling financial gain and rabid fan worship with a sincere Christian ministry. These are big questions for any band to grapple with, but Powell treats the subject with an admirable humanity that steers clear of over-the-top preaching or blind faith. Throughout, Third Day offers tough, rugged backing in the best Southern rock tradition, but with a modern touch that will also please fans of Staind and 3 Doors Down.
Third Day is one of CCM's biggest crossover acts, known as much for their tuneful alt-rock craft as for their earnest faith. Formed in the mid-1990s in Georgia, Third Day started out like most indie bands, gigging relentlessly and releasing low-budget home recordings. In 1996, they signed a multi-album deal with Reunion Records, the premier Christian label, which ensured radio play and audience exposure on a much bigger scale. Tours and collaborations with acts like Newsboys and Michael W. Smith followed, helping to raise their profile even more, and by the '00s, the band were genuine CCM stars, in an offshoot genre--Alternative CCM--that they helped to create.
