Notes: Personnel: Big Maceo Merriweather (vocals, piano); Ransom Knowling (bass saxophone); Tyrell Dixon, Melvin Draper, Clifford "Snags" Jones (drums); Tampa Red (vocals, guitar). Liner Note Author: Gillian George. Recording information: Chichago, IL (06/24/1941-02/26/1945). Document's Flying Boogie, Vol. 1: 1941-1945 offers an overview of pianist Big Maceo Merriweather's first sessions recorded in Chicago. These 21 performances were captured at five separate occasions between June 24, 1941, and February 26, 1945. With the exception of "Macy Special (Flying Boogie)," all tracks include Tampa Red on guitar with a revolving door of drummers. "Worried Life Blues," "Texas Blues," "Macy Special (Flying Boogie)," and "Kid Man Blues" are undeniably some of the pianist's finest moments; however, collectors probably already own this material and the novice is advised to purchase a compilation that includes Maceo's classic instrumental track, "Chicago Breakdown." ~ Al Campbell
