Performer: Jia Peng Fang
Distributor: Allegro Corporation (Dist Notes: Arrangers: Kiyoshi Yoshida; Seiichi Kyoda. Jia Peng Fang is one of the world's finest niko (pronounced "erhu") players. This two-stringed instrument is the Chinese equivalent of a violin, as it is bowed and has a similar pitch range (although it is not played under the chin). On this compilation, listeners are treated to an assortment of pieces culled from Fang's first three albums: RIVER, RAINBOW, and FARAWAY. Additionally, a live duet with pianist Naoyuki Onda is included on this collection. Each track on JIA PENG FANG BEST combines soaring Chinese melodies with Western pop orchestrations. The niko is an extremely expressive instrument, and in Fang's hands, it is used to create long, legato phrases. Never does Fang pluck this instrument or play any kind of staccato passages. In contrast, this music is smooth, steady, and flowing. Highlights include the tranquil "Seishu (Pure)" and the innocent "Memory of Childhood." BEST is a picturesque and charming overview of Fang's work. |
