Performer: Dinah Washington
Producer: Clyde Otis; Bob Shad; Nadine Cohodas (Compilation) Distributor: Universal Distribution Notes: Personnel: Dinah Washington (vocals); Rick Henderson (alto saxophone); Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis (tenor saxophone); Clark Terry (trumpet); Gus Chappell (trombone); Joe Zawinul, Junior Mance, Wynton Kelly (piano); Keter Betts (bass instrument); Ed Thigpen, Jimmy Crawford , Panama Francis, Teddy Stewart (drums); Hal Mooney, Quincy Jones & His Orchestra. Liner Note Author: Nadine Cohodas. Billy Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Sarah Vaughan are widely considered to be the greatest female jazz vocalists of all time. However, if there was a fourth name added to that list, it could very well be Dinah Washington. Few singers possessed a voice as heartrending as Washington; she was a master of the blues and a matchless balladeer. This compilation presents 12 timeless performances by Washington, including a dynamic rendition of "A Foggy Day" and a laid-back version of "Sunny Side of the Street." "A Slick Chick (On the Mellow Side)," "If I Loved You," and "Trouble in the Lowlands" are also included on this disc, and these are considerably rarer tracks. Biographer Nadine Cohodas chose great repertoire for QUEEN, focusing on a cross-section of Washington's work, rather than her most popular material. Indeed, this album gives listeners the opportunity to really explore the range of Washington's art.
Despite a relatively short career--she died in 1963 at the age of 39--Dinah Washington laid claim to being one of the major jazz voices, and one of the most versatile of all jazz singers. Her voice was rich; she filled everything she sang with heartfelt emotion, and she could make even material of less than stellar quality sound deeply moving. More importantly, she was equally at home (and had hits) with blues, popular songs of the day, and standards; toward the end she also became a major voice of the burgeoning soul movement.
