Performer: Various Artists
Distributor: Bayside Record Dist. Notes: Performers include: Jefferson Airplane, Lemon Pipers, Captain Beefheart, Merilee Rush & The Turnabouts, Young Bloods. Contains 30 tracks. This three-disc set (it only has 30 songs, which means it could easily have been a double-disc package, or with some editing, a single disc) claims to be an anthology of psychedelic hits from the 1960s, but only someone with a seriously chemically altered brain stem would ever call "We'll Sing in the Sunshine" by Gail Garnett, "Angel of the Morning" by Merilee Rush, or "Chewy Chewy" by the Ohio Express psychedelic, and for the record, nothing by Glenn Yarbrough (his version of "Baby the Rain Must Fall" is included here) could ever possibly fit that category. Still, there are some nice surprises, like the Vacels' rare single of Bob Dylan's "Can You Please Crawl out My Window" and a quirky cover by Harry Nilsson of Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues" (lifted from Nilsson's 1974 John Lennon-produced album, Pussy Cats, which means it isn't even from the '60s). Issues of continuity aside, this anthology might help bring on a flashback or two. ~ Steve Leggett
