Performer: J. Geils Band
Distributor: Bayside Record Dist. Notes: J. Geils Band: Seth Justman (vocals, keyboards); Stephen Bladd (vocals, percussion); Peter Wolf (vocals); Magic Dick (harmonica); Daniel Klein (bass guitar). Personnel: J. Geils Band (guitar). The J. Geils Band was cruising along in the early 1970s on the strength of their blazing live show, as well as a string of moderately successful albums, including BLOODSHOT and THE MORNING AFTER. 1973's LADIES INVITED continued the band's musical direction of blues-rock and soulful ballads, and was the first J. Geils release to not include a cover song. While the album didn't spawn any bonafide hit singles, there are still plenty of standouts, particularly the Stonesy ballad "That's Why I'm Thinking of You" and the Black Crowes-ish rocker "Lay Your Good Thing Down." LADIES INVITED remains one of the J. Geils Band's more underrated albums.
Q (5/95, p.124) - 1 Star - Poor - "...LADIES INVITED was a mighty disappointment upon its September 1973 release and hasn't worn well since....Even the wildly creative blowing of virtuoso blues harpist Magic Dick, a one-man sax section, fails to save the day."
Boston's J. Geils Band appeared at the dawn of the '70s as a high-energy blues/R&B band offering an alternative to the singer/songwriters, soft pop, and prog-rock then in ascendance. Powered by Peter Wolf's Mick Jagger-like showmanship and Magic Dick's blues harmonica wail, they chugged along powerfully for years, but didn't acheive star status till they incorporated synthesizers and pop at the turn of the decade, only to break up soon after.
