Marshall Crenshaw is one of those songwriters whose original songs sound like they could've been written in the early-to-mid-1960s, yet they don't come across as "retro" (there's a complete lack of irony here) or overly nostalgic. Crenshaw writes songs in a "classic" mold--concise, catchy, emotional music that sounds better with each listening. This 2001 live set from the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, New Jersey finds Marshall in an "unplugged" context, where he revisits his own impressive catalog ("Cynical Girl," "Whenever You're On My Mind") and recasts the hits of others ("Walk Away Renee," "Endless Sleep"). DVD Features: Region 0 Super Jewel Case Plus Audio: 24 Bit/96 Khz PCM Stereo - English 24 Bit/48 Khz Dolby Digital 5.1 - English
It is entirely fitting that Marshall Crenshaw made his first big splash playing John Lennon in BEATLEMANIA. Although the affable singer-songwriter resembles Buddy Holly more than Lennon, his music harks back to the glory years of rock & roll, when all that rock required was good hooks and a beat you could dance to. His debut record in 1982 teemed with great melodies and simple-yet-sharp lyrics, and spawned "Someday Someway," a big hit for Robert Gordon. Since then, Crenshaw has seen his songs covered by a wide range of artists, from the Nitty Gritty Dirt band to Bette Midler, and he has continued to make high-quality records on his own terms.
