Performer: Jefferson Airplane
Distributor: Gotham Distributing Corp. Notes: The BMG Special Products compilation The Best of Jefferson Airplane: Somebody to Love is a ten-track, budget-priced set that contains some of the Jefferson Airplane's best-loved hits, mainly from the 1967 album Surrealistic Pillow, including "White Rabbit," "Today," "Comin' Back to Me," and "Somebody to Love," plus six album tracks. As budget-line collections go, The Best of Jefferson Airplane: Somebody to Love isn't bad, especially since it contains the original versions of these tracks, but better collections are available for not much more money. Pick up The Worst of Jefferson Airplane on RCA instead. Please keep in mind that this set has the same track listing as Somebody to Love released on the Collectables label in 2004. ~ Al Campbell The Collectables compilation Somebody to Love is a ten-track, budget-priced set that contains some of the Jefferson Airplane's best-loved hits, mainly from the 1967 album Surrealistic Pillow, including "White Rabbit," "Today," "Comin' Back to Me," and "Somebody to Love" plus six album tracks. One of the quintessential San Francisco psychedelic bands, the Jefferson Airplane brought together interests in acoustic blues, folk, and rock music. Add political topicality and modal improvisations, and you have an inspired, mind-bending sound that could have only sprung forth from the late '60s. In their initial, most beloved phase, they were powered by the powerful dual lead vocals of Grace Slick and Marty Balin and the serpentine guitar of Jorma Kaukonen. They went through a traumatic series of personnel and name changes over the decades (they ventured into commercial AOR in the late '70s and early '80s) but their early work retains its seminal power.
