Performer: Thin Lizzy
Distributor: E1 Distribution (USA) Notes: One of the most spectacular of all the DVD documentaries released in this admirable series, Inside Thin Lizzy might remain locked within the customary routine of quick clips and talking heads, but what clips they are! From glimpses of the band on local London television in 1974, charging through stunning versions of "Rosalie" and "Its Only Money," through a 1976 Top of the Pops airing for "Don't Believe a Word," and on to a 1978 live version of "Bad Reputation," shot during the band's Australian tour, Inside Thin Lizzy is a collector's cornucopia of dramatic sound and vision, to which a gaggle of British rock critics add their own thoughts and observations to the band's growth and impact. As usual, not every word is one you might agree with, and confirmed Thin Lizzy fans would do well to keep a boxful of screwed-up pieces of paper on-hand, with which to bombard the screen during some of the more absurd pronouncements. But still there's a love and respect present throughout the 70-minute-program that is difficult to argue with. ~ Dave Thompson
Spin (p.86) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[They] combined guitar-slinger brawn and barroom wisdom."
Ireland's first heavy rockers, Thin Lizzy rocked throughout the '70s with a mix of teenage rebellion and working-class angst, becoming known for wild behavior on and off the stage. Phil Lynott's Bruce Springsteen-meets-Jimi Hendrix voice perfectly suited the band's power-chord hooks and dual guitar harmonies. They hit the bigtime in '76 with JAILBREAK's title track and "Boys Are Back in Town." The group's slow fade-out ended with a farewell tour in 1983, and Lynott's drug-related death in 1986.
