Despite Beyonce Knowles's Diana Ross-like stature in Destiny's Child, newer member Michelle Williams beat Ms. Knowles to the punch when it came time to spin out a solo project following the announcement of the group's self-imposed break. Drawing from her musical roots growing up in the church, Williams's solo bow HEART TO YOURS is a gospel record with the kind of contemporary R&B/crossover trimmings normally associated with the likes of Yolanda Adams (whose name is mentioned by Williams in her lengthy list of thanks.) Blessed with a light and sprightly vocal presence, the Rockford, Illinois native easily shifts gears whether she's going from a lush, piano-driven intro to a funkier, new-jack edge within "Rock With Me" or soaring throughout the bubbly, Janet Jackson-flavored "Sun Will Shine Again." Williams does equally well holding her own against a slew of special guests including Mary Mary (a thumping "So Glad") and Men Of Standard's Isaac Carree and Lowell Pye (the inspirational "You Care For Me"). Other highlights include the roof-raising Shirley Caesar duet "Steal Away To Jesus," the a cappella Destiny's Child reunion "Gospel Medley" and a simmering Carl Thomas team-up on BeBe and CeCe Winan's "Heaven."
Mojo (Publisher) (9/02, p.100) - "...an out and out gospel recording...[there is] much to marvel at."
