When Travis burst onto the American scene in 2000 with the ubiquitous "Why Does It Always Rain on Me?," most Stateside listeners assumed that the Scottish foursome was a proverbial overnight sensation. In fact, the group had been making the scene in the UK for nearly five years, garnering rabid media attention and racking up an impressive string of hits. SINGLES sets the record straight, collecting many of the band's most popular works and adding "Walking in the Sun," a newly recorded track. Of course, fans have always championed Travis's tuneful mix of 1970s-inspired singer/songwriter rock and emotive modern pop of the Jeff Buckley/Radiohead variety. Less angst-ridden than either of the aforementioned acts, the band's gently strummed acoustic guitars and smooth vocals often recall Bread with a tougher rhythm section and a dose of Fleetwood Mac's dark California poetry. In addition, the singles' sweeping production style imbues the music with a deep melancholy reminiscent of '60s folk rock. SINGLES ably compiles many of Travis's finest recorded moments, serving as a perfect introduction for US listeners.
Glasgow, Scotland's Travis started off as an alt-rock band in 1997 (look no further than the early track "All I Want To Do Is Rock"), but transformed into Britpop songcrafters for their massive sophomore release, THE MAN WHO. Praised by Oasis' Noel Gallagher, Travis became one of the most popular European groups of the early 21st century. Their gentle, melodic approach became a hallmark of the latter-day Britpop sound.
