Conceived as a benefit album for Nobel peace prize winner/activist Aung San Suu Kyi, For the Lady is a two-disc set featuring quite an eclectic roster of pop artists. Kyi is a political target in her homeland of Burma, facing consistent attacks on her life through her peaceful protests that bring much needed attention to Burma's harsh military regime's inhuman practices. Proceeds of the disc go directly to a humanitarian agency working with Kyi and others to help bring peaceful resolution to this overlooked and dire situation. For the Lady features a rather mixed bag of socially conscious and politically active artists including Ani DiFranco, Talib Kweli, Pearl Jam, Peter Gabriel and U2. While most of these tracks have already been released, they appear here in various alternate forms (live, acoustic, etc). Some of the tracks make absolute sense in their inclusion, while others are quite baffling. The appearance of Avril Lavigne's "Complicated" and Eric Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight" both seem wholly inappropriate given their lyrical content, and make no sense other than to include their names as star-power purchasing incentive. For its good and bad points, For the Lady is a powerful compilation backed by an equally moving and potent cause. ~ Rob Theakston
