To listen to sound clips, you'll need the most current version of the
Performer: J. Geils Band
Distributor: Gotham Distributing Corp. Notes: This budget-priced compilation provides a fine introduction to one of '70s rock's finest live bands. The tracks here come from this sextet's years on Atlantic Records, 1971-1977. Included are the major hits from that era: "Looking for a Love," a rollicking blast of R&B from 1972; the reggae/ska of 1973's "Give it to Me"; and the band's biggest hit of the '70s, "Must of Got Lost," which reached number 12 on the charts in 1974. This disc also includes a sampling of the band's unparalleled live show, with cuts from two live albums, Full House and Blow Your Face Out. Although the J. Geils Band would find more commercial success after moving to the EMI label, their best blues/R&B/bar band rock was recorded during their time with Atlantic. This release serves to whet the appetite of the J. Geils novitiate, and to remind original fans how great the band was. ~ Jim Newsom At ten tracks, Collectables' Looking for a Love isn't definitive, but it does provide a low-priced, high-energy introduction to one of the greatest rock & roll bands of all time. The J. Geils Band took the best of blues, soul, and rock and whipped it into a frothy brew guaranteed to throw any party into high gear. All of the songs here are classic Geils and therefore classic classic rock. Seven of the ten songs on the collection come from studio albums recorded for Atlantic between 1971 and 1977; the other three come from the incendiary live albums Full House (1972) and Blow Your Face Out (1976). Included are classic rockers like "Looking for a Love," "Must of Got Lost," "Give It to Me," and the live "Houseparty" and "Whammer Jammer." If you have the funds, you may want to just skip this disc and head to the two-CD Houseparty: Anthology. [Looking for a Love is a reissue (with a different cover) of Rhino's 1995 release Must of Got Lost.] ~ Tim Sendra
Boston's J. Geils Band appeared at the dawn of the '70s as a high-energy blues/R&B band offering an alternative to the singer/songwriters, soft pop, and prog-rock then in ascendance. Powered by Peter Wolf's Mick Jagger-like showmanship and Magic Dick's blues harmonica wail, they chugged along powerfully for years, but didn't acheive star status till they incorporated synthesizers and pop at the turn of the decade, only to break up soon after.
