Performer: Various Artists/Junior Kimbrough
Distributor: Ryko Distribution Notes: Tributee: Junior Kimbrough. Singer/guitarist Junior Kimbrough was a staple of the Fat Possum label's down-and-dirty blues roster. His Mississippi hill-country sound, simultaneously rural and electrified, had a driving, hypnotic quality that survived well beyond his death in 1998. As testament to his enduring legacy, a brace of rock artists joined forces to pay tribute to the late, great bluesman on SUNDAY NIGHTS: THE SONGS OF JUNIOR KIMBROUGH. Iggy Pop & the Stooges open things up with the genuinely disturbing "You Better Run," where Iggy puts tongue firmly in cheek to inhabit the character of a potential rapist, while the Stooges rage behind him. Former Screaming Trees frontman Mark Lanegan provides one of the finest moments with his version of "All Night Long," which comes the closest to capturing Kimbrough's transfixing power. Spiritualized hearkens back to singer Jason Pierce's Spacemen 3 days with a psychedelic-blues take on "Sad Days Lonely Nights." As the alt-rock heavyweights line up to give their all for Kimbrough, it becomes clear that the template he created will continue to be reinterpreted and expanded upon.
Uncut (p.130) - 3 stars out of 5 - "Good, grungey fun..."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.90) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[The musicians] revel in the occasion - the Heartless Bastards whack out a brilliantly unadorned version of Done Got Old, while Whitey Kirst's Pull Your Clothes Off could pass for classic Wire."
