For the soundtrack to Paul Weitz's charming 2005 comedy, IN GOOD COMPANY, album producer Kathy Nelson brings in an eclectic mix that features Stephen Trask's score, along with a dynamic selection of pop tracks. Songs here range from vintage R&B (Aretha Franklin's funky "Chain of Fools") to classic rock (Steely Dan's contemplative "Reelin' in the Years") to indie folk (Iron & Wine's rural melancholia) to bossa nova (Diana Krall's breezy take on "Besame Mucho"). Trask's percussion-heavy compositions punctuate the proceedings with distinctive marimba melodies, while Iron & Wine steals the show with the nearly 10-minute "The Trapeze Swinger," a gorgeous previously unreleased tune that stands as one of the group's finest. For fans of the GARDEN STATE soundtrack and other similarly inspired collections, the IN GOOD COMPANY disc comes highly recommended.
Rolling Stone (No. 967, p.82) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[Features] three typically beautiful acoustic cuts from Iron & Wine's singer-songwriter Sam Beam..."
